Missouri Children's Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Program
Charity Event: MidMoBRR
Amount raised: $6500 (past BRR rides and Ironman Arizona)

Each year, thousands of children in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes. At the Children’s Hospital at University Hospital and Clinics, the pediatric diabetes team assists children throughout Missouri and surrounding states who have been diagnosed with diabetes by teaching them and their families how to successfully manage their disease.

The Pediatric Diabetes Program at Mizzou Children’s Hospital remains one of the nationwide leaders in providing quality care to children with diabetes. Its renowned reputation is founded upon decades of research and landmark discoveries in the area of pediatric diabetes, led by Dr. Robert L. Jackson and Dr. David Goldstein, who are both well-known leaders in the field.

The education and care offered by the Pediatric Diabetes Program to children and their families is an invaluable resource to those in Columbia, and across the country.

Columbia Second Chance
Charity Event: XCXtreme & Paws in Park
Amount raised: $4400

Columbia Second Chance was founded in 1985 as a privately-funded, all-volunteer organization dedicated to "seeking first-class homes for second-hand pets." Through the kindness of our volunteers and our foster homes, we care for animals of all types, either on a temporary basis while we search for a new, permanent home, or on a long-term basis while the animal is treated for illness or injury.

Our mission is to provide for the benevolent relief of unwanted animals. The organization will provide food, shelter, medical assistance, and general relief to those animals that have been made homeless through the acts or omissions of people; to provide this care for each animal while researching and approving permanent adoptive homes; to educate the public regarding the health, exercise, and general needs of these animals, as well as to the necessity of spaying and neutering as a means of alleviating the burden of unwanted animals; and to do every act as may be necessary to aid and assist the community in providing quality, permanent homes for these animals and to promote the goals and gains of this mission.

Õ Understand the cellular and molecular basis of lung disease, especially in critically ill patients, and undertake cutting edge basic science and clinical research to better evaluate and treat such disorders.

Õ Teach the next generation of doctors how to care for patients with lung disease and critical illnesses, and instill in them clinical skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to question the biological basis for the disorders they treat.

The clinical expertise of the seven full-time faculty members in the division covers a broad range of pulmonary and critical care medicine, including asthma, obstructive and restrictive lung disease, pulmonary physiology, sleep apnea, and all aspects of ICU medicine.  The Division has an active clinical and basic science research program with projects related to asthma, COPD, aerosol therapy, lung cancer, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, and sleep medicine.  The Division has a fully accredited and highly competitive three-year combined Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program having a total of seven clinical fellows.  The fellows are trained to be skilled clinician scientists through intense clinical exposure and several months devoted to research.  The fellowship’s strength in pulmonary and critical care medicine lies in state-of-the-art facilities for treatment of patients, active patient care and research by faculty members, and close teaching affiliation with other specialties.  Our Division is recognized for its excellence in teaching medical students and medical residents.

The convenient location of the Medical Center affords the Division an interaction with other local medical facilities and university departments in a variety of collaborative research efforts.  In short, the members of the Division are committed to the highest quality of patient care, teaching, and clinical and basic research to further understand acute and chronic pulmonary disease; our goals being to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families.
