Katy Trail Torch Relay
6 day torch relay across the Katy Trail - May 28th - June 2nd

In tribute to the 20th Anniversary of the Katy Trail, there will be a 6 day celebration bike ride and torch relay from one end of the Katy Trail to the other.

The goal of the events are to encourage every community along the Katy Trail to get involved in a rolling festival celebrating the benefits of the Katy Trail. Starting on Friday, May 28th and ending on Wednesday, June 2nd, communities are encouraged to organize small events in tribute to the Katy Trail. This event is a great opportunity for Katy Trail communities to celebrate 20 years of this amazing trail system, highlight your unique place on the Katy Trail, encourage riders to patronize local businesses, and invite guests to visit again in the future.

Community Celebrations
Towns along the Katy Trail are encouraged to host a mini celebration event as Celebration Riders and the Anniversary Torch come through their community. The Celebration Ride and Torch Relay will kick off in Clinton on the morning of Friday, May 28th and will be staggered through the week ending in Saint Charles on Wednesday, June 2nd. Each community will have a scheduled two hour window of time to host their celebration event. Activities at events could include music, food, a declaration by the Mayor or other elected officials, decorations, entertainment, etc.. The extent and who gets involved in the celebration is left up to the organizers in each community. The main Katy Trail Birthday Celebration event will be in Boonville on Saturday evening May 29 at Kemper Park with free music (Split Lip Rayfield), food, drinks, camping, showers, and food.

Katy Trail Celebration Relay
Over the 6 day celebration a torch will be carried across the State on the Katy Trail. Torch bearers will include individuals and members of groups from communities on the Katy Trail. These could included members of Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, elected officials, and civic organizations (Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, VFW, etc). The torch represents the achievements and success of the Katy Trail and will be treated with Olympic Ceremony. The goal will be for the torch to arrive in each community and proceed to a public park or business near the trail where an active community member or public official from the town welcomes the torch runners and assembled suporters, makes a Declaration to the 20 Year Anniversary of the Katy Trail, encourages people to eat and drink at local restaurants and watering holes, and generally encourages people to have a good time. After the ceremony, the torch will continue its journey to the next community on
the trail.

Attendees to these celebration events will be community members, torch relay runners, their families and friends, elected officials, bicyclists from the Katy Trail Celebration Ride and members of the news media. This is a great opportunity for communities to notify local press outlets to cover these events.

Corresponding Events
In addition to the Torch Relay and Community Celebration Event there are two bicycle rides that will be held on the Katy Trail during this same period of time. The Pedaler's Jamboree bicycle/music festival will be returning on Memorial Day Weekend (May 29th and 30th) and will have live music in communities between Sedalia and Jefferson City. There is a large expected turnout for this event with last years participation at over 400 riders. New for this year there will be a trail wide bicycle tour call the Katy Trail Celebration Ride. This event will follow the schedule of the torch relay and community events and will join the celebration across the state! For more information on these events please visit: www.pedalersjamboree.com

These events are being sponsored and promoted by the Katy Trail Merchants and Communities organization and the Missouri River Communities Network. The Katy Trail Torch Relay is also being supported in part by a grant from the Missouri Recreational Trails Education Grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
